SECTION A- READING (12 MARKS)
Q1. Read the given passage and answer the questions that follow.
The concept of ‘sustainability’ emerged in the late 20th century as humanity began to grapple with the finite nature of Earth’s resources. Defined broadly, sustainability is the ability to maintain or improve standards of living without damaging or depleting natural resources for present and future generations. This philosophy is often encapsulated in the three pillars of sustainability: ` environmental, economic, and social.
Environmental sustainability focuses on the health of the planet, emphasizing practices like reducing pollution, conserving natural habitats, and minimizing waste. Economic sustainability encourages practices that support long term economic growth without negatively impacting social, environmental, and cultural aspects. Social sustainability seeks to maintain and improve social quality, with concepts like justice, equity, and diversity being at its core.
The intersection of these three pillars can be seen in many initiatives around the world. For example, cities are adopting green building standards to reduce energy consumption and waste. Companies are implementing corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs to contribute positively to society while maintaining profitable operations. Additionally, educational institutions are embedding sustainability into curricula to empower the next generation to make responsible decisions.
However, achieving true sustainability is challenging. Balancing economic growth with environmental protection and social equity requires collaborative efforts and sometimes difficult compromises. Subject: Addressing the Menace of Stray Cattle and Dogs on City Roads
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to express my deep concern over the increasing problem of stray cattle and dogs on the roads of our city. This issue has not only become a significant traffic hazard but also poses serious threats to public safety and hygiene.
Stray cattle wandering onto busy roads often lead to traffic congestion and accidents, putting both the animals and motorists at risk. Similarly, stray dogs, in theirsearch for food and shelter, can become aggressive, leading to unfortunate incidents of dog bites and spreading diseases such as rabies.
To tackle this issue effectively, I suggest the following measures:
- Regular Animal Control Operations: The municipal authorities should conduct regular operations to capture and put stray animals into appropriate shelters. This ensures that the animals are cared for in a safe environment and reduces the risk of accidents on the roads.
- Sterilization and Vaccination Programs: Stray dogs should be sterilized which can help control their population and prevent the spread of diseases. Animal help group and NGOs can be coordinated with.
- Public Awareness Campaigns: Educating the public about not abandoning can reduce the number of stray animals. Campaigns should also encourage citizens to report stray animals to the authorities promptly.
- Infrastructure Development: Building and maintaining animal shelters with adequate facilities can provide a safe place for stray animals. This reduces their stay on the streets for survival and helps in managing their population.
- Strict Enforcement of Laws: Ensuring strict enforcement of laws related to animal cruelty and abandonment can deter individuals from leaving animals on the streets. Additionally, setting up a dedicated helpline for reporting stray animals can streamline the response process.
Addressing this issue requires a coordinated effort from both the authorities and the citizens. By implementing these measures, we can ensure a safe and better environment for both the residents and the stray animals of our city.

Subject: Urgent Need for Improved Waste Management in Our Locality
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to draw attention to the important issue of waste management in our locality, which has become a matter of great concern for residents. The current system of waste collection is highly inefficient, leading to piles of garbage accumulating on streets, sidewalks, and vacant lots. These heaps not only create an unpleasant environment but also pose serious health risks by attracting rats and insects, contributing to the spread of diseases.
The irregularity in waste collection schedules has further increased the problem. Often, garbage is left uncollected for days, causing foul smell and creating an ugly scene. This situation calls for immediate action to prevent our locality from turning into a dumping ground.
I suggest the following measures to address this issue effectively:
- Regular and Timely Collection: Implement a strict schedule for waste collection and ensure adherence to it. Regular monitoring can help maintain discipline and prevent the accumulation of waste.
- Segregation at Source: Promote the segregation of waste at the household level into biodegradable and non-biodegradable categories. This will facilitate easier processing and recycling of waste.
- Public Awareness Campaigns: Conduct awareness programs to educate residents on the importance of proper waste disposal and the benefits of recycling. Involving local schools and community groups can amplify the reach and impact of these campaigns.
- Increased Number of Bins: Install more garbage bins at strategic locations throughout the locality. Ensure that these bins are regularly emptied to prevent overflow.
- Partnership with Recycling Units: Collaborate with recycling units to process recyclable materials effectively. This can reduce the burden on landfills and promote sustainable waste management practices.
- Penalties for Non-compliance: Introduce penalties for individuals and businesses that do not comply with waste management regulations. This will encourage more responsible behavior towards waste disposal.
These issues require a coordinated effort from both the municipal authorities and the residents. By implementing these measures, we can ensure a cleaner, healthier environment for all.
Yours sincerely, [Your Name

VIII LONG ANSWER
Both “Mrs. Packletide’s Tiger” and “Dear Departed” offer sharp criticism of their female characters through their focus on trivialities.
In “Mrs. Packletide’s Tiger,” Mrs. Packletide is driven by her desire to outshine her rival, Loona Bimberton. Her aim of superficial achievements, like shooting a tiger to gain social fame highlights her vanity and competitive nature. She gives importance to social prestige over empathy, making her actions seem shallow and motivated by petty jealousy.
In “Dear Departed,” the female characters Amelia and Elizabeth are portrayed as self-serving and materialistic. Their concern over the division of their father’s belongings, rather than grieving his death, heightens their greed and lack of familial bond. Their verbal fights over trivial things colours them as heartless and small, more interested in material gain than emotional connection.
These characters’ emphasis on insignificant things highlights their weak, self-centered personalities.
OR
Alliteration:
Repetition of consonant sounds, like “wasteful war” or “fair breeze blew,” creates a musical quality.
Alliteration emphasizes key phrases, making them stand out and stay in the reader’s mind, thereby enhancing the poem’s overall impact.
Personification: By giving human traits to non-human things, like “ice growled and howled,” the poets create a more vivid picture.
Imagery:
Words paint clear pictures in the mind, such as “gilded monuments” or “the ice was all around,” adding detail to the poem.
By appealing to the senses, imagery makes the poems come alive, taking the reader in the scene of the event.
Alliteration and rhythm enhance the lyrical quality, making the poems enjoyable to read aloud. Imagery used makes the poem live in front of the readers as a moving picture.
